Make UP Misfits - My Online Portfolio is Now Up

Yayers!

So, I've been lacking on doing actual makeovers and spreading word about my freelancing, and as most of you guys know - I'm getting the ball rolling now.

It's at its baby stages in terms of spreading my name and actually getting clienteles and crap but hopefully by next year or even the end of this one, I'll have everything set up annnnd have actual work! Ha.

Any Makeup Freelancers out there got tips to share with me or suggestions?

I'm already taking advice from a lovely follower and will soon be making business cards.
My friend suggested flyers. But I hate flyers. I'm those people who throw away flyers.

In terms of building up my portfolio - I'm just asking favors through close friends and doing makeovers on them for free. They all already come to me for makeup so I don't mind that - plus they spread my name if someone likes their makeup. Win/win.

Oh, bit of drama I'll let you guys in.
Make Up Misfits was suppose to be me and my friend.
She does makeovers on other people and I told her to take pictures and send them to me so we can combine them in the portfolio. I contacted her through Myspace and Aim. I've gotten nothing.
So is it shady of me to take her off MUM's site and I go at it alone?
I'd like the support but I don't want to do all the work PLUS I wanna get this shit going now! Haha.

Whatever.

So here's my online portfolio: MakeUPMisfits (make sure to Follow that blog too!)
I'll be updating photos almost weekly so follow to see my latest and greatest.
PLEASE spread my name around if you're from the Bay Area, California.

Oh, and about pricing. Since I am starting up - what do you guys think I should do my flat out pay rate? I was thinking starting at $20 and working up depending on look.

Side note.
Congrats to Saimese for winning my contest.
AND SHADYNESS TO SOMEONE WHO STOLED SARAH'S PICTURES AND TRY TO ENTER AS THEIR OWN!
That's some crazy ass bullshit.
Don't steal from others - that's lame as hell. And for freakin' makeup?
I'd understand if I was giving away a million dollars and baby Jesus.
BUT I DON'T HAVE A BABY JESUS!
or a million dollars *tear at being poor

That's all for now...

  1. hey, im working on the same as you. seems as though we are both in the same stage. lol. id say as a piece of advice, never go out without ur makeup done...u know like to the mall and stuff. my mom is a foster parent so ive been spreading the word to all the parents and teens i meet. also, after u get your cards, take them to local beauty supply stores, salons and ever schools. the school will be helpful during prom season since they will be seen next to like dress shops and stuff. hth

  4. Seem like we ALL on the same page. Umm...lets see. I got the business cards and hand them out everytime someone asks me about or compliments my makeup. Post ads on craigslist in your area...that got me a few leads. Search craigslist as well for work. I got so much I do...umm, oh yeah, go on model mayhem and search their castings link for MUA's in your area. Im doing a fashion show this weekend from that. Im doing it free but I get professional pics so Im cool. Build that portfolio. Go to vistaprint, get those free brochures made and hang them on bulletin boards in costume shops, salons, schools (if you can), beauty supply stores. What else do I do?? Oh, $20 is TOOO cheap hun. You need way more compensation especially if you are going to travel to do the makeup by that person. I did makeup for an Indian wedding reception and I charged $50 plus got a $20 tip. So I got $70 for ONE face. Dont short change yourself. One more thing, I havent done but may do, work at a makeup counter on weekends or something. MAC, Lancome, Estee Lauder, whomever. You get more practice and build clientele. You will be surprised how many people hire these makeup artists, who are probably not even as good as you or I or anyone one else on here, and they get nice paying gigs because they work for say MAC. Hope this helps. Email me if you want some more info/advice cause I am FULL of ideas. krystalburrell@ymail.com. I am always willing to help. Oh, as far as your friend goes, I wuld give her a little more time, like the end of the week. No response by then, dump her. You got the skills to do it on your own. Now I am on my way to start following the other blog you started. Good luck

  8. $20? that's waaayy to cheap mama! I charge prom looks $40 w/o lashes and $50 w/lashes. It really depends on how dramatic of a look they want. Also, if you have to travel, I charge 10 bucks more.

Can't think of anything else. I'm in the Bay Area too!

I stay in the East Bay. How about you?
